When I make my projections for the fielding ratings, the voting for the Fielding Bible is not yet published. In a way, that’s good because it is mostly my opinion and the opinion of the Strat mangers that I contact for help with the fielding. Sometimes, I do try to be a ‘mind reader’ and try to guess at what Strat may do with the fielding ratings based on the won-lost record and how the player is used on defense. The Fielding Bible voting changed this year and the voters only get 5 votes instead of 10, which makes it tougher for me to adjust my projections. I won’t try to adjust any of the players who didn’t get any Fielding Bible votes and I’ll stay with my original projections for those guys.
The catchers: A surprise for 2025 was the season that Dillon Dingler had. He was undrafted in at least one of my leagues last year. I projected a c-2 and now he’s finished 5th in the voting and should pull out a c-1. Strat didn’t give him one of their 5 votes and he should still get a 1. I projected Tyler Heineman to get a c-4 and by finishing 10th in the voting, he could be a c-2 or 3. I projected Pedro Pages as a c-1 and he finished 12th and he’ll most likely drop to a c-2. This shouldn’t affect the throwing arms for any of the catchers.
First base: Vlad looked pretty good on defense in the postseason and he finished 5th overall in the voting. I projected a 1b-2. Strat didn’t give him a vote. I’ll stay with the 1b-2 and say he’s got a 33% chance of a 1b-1. Spencer Steer finished 3rd in the voting and is sure to get a 1b-1 after I projected a 1b-2. I projected 2's for both Harper and Walker, Strat has them in their top 5, they are both 50/50 to be a 1b-1.
Second base: Nico Hoerner was everyone’s favorite and got all 16 first place votes. Xavier Edwards finished 3rd in the voting and was Strat’s 4th pick. He’s projected as a 2b-2 and he looks like he will be a 2b-1! Conversely, Stott only got 2 votes and his 2b-1 could be in jeopardy. Luis Rengifo only got 2 votes and I projected him to be a 2b-1. Now, he looks more likely to be a 2b-2 which he was a few years ago.
Third base: I projected Arenado and Ramirez to be 3b-1's. Neither one got a vote from Strat. Each received 3 votes from the 16 voters. I’d say that both of them are at risk of being a 3b-2. Ramirez has about a 70% chance at the 1 and Arenado is about 50/50.
Shortstop: The top 5 are all 1's: Betts, Allen, Witt, Walls and Neto. Seager finished 6th in the voting and without a vote from Strat, he’s probably going to end up with the ss-2 that I projected. Winn and Swanson dropped to 7th and 8th, and with votes from Strat, they should both retain their ss-1 ratings. Jeremy Pena may drop from a projected ss-1 to a ss-2 as he’s on the bubble without a vote from Strat, he’s 50/50 also.
Leftfield: Tommy Pham got one vote and finished 9th. I just don’t see him getting a rating better than a lf-4 in Strat but I have been wrong in the past. Could that one vote net him a lf-3?
Centerfield: The top 10 vote getters should all be a 1 in cf. The glaring omission is Michael Harris and I wonder how he would have done with the old system where each voter got 10 votes instead of 5.
Rightfield: I projected Corbin Carroll to be a rf-2 and he finished 5th in the voting and got the 5th vote from Strat, so, he’s just about a sure thing to be a rf-1. Acuna, Judge and Lukes all got one vote and I’m not going to change my projections for them at this time.
Multi-Position: I believe I did well with the multi-position players. Strat’s top 5 are Dubon, Clement, Rafaela, Caballero and Schneemann. I was generous with all of these 5 players. Javier Sanoja only got 3 votes and he’s an excellent defender. I was sort of surprised with Caballero and the fielding bible because it seemed like the Rays traded him after he made some mental errors out at second base in key spots.
Overall, I believe that I did fairly well. The Strat fielding ratings should be out soon and then we’ll know for sure. Good luck trading and getting ready for your drafts.
